71 Impala Rear End Swap

I recently purchased a 1971 Impala Sports Coupe. I am not aware of the gearing in the gear end but I know it's not posi so it's not what I want. I'm sitting a SBC 409 under the hood with a 35o Trans and 3500 Stall Converter. But basically I would like to know what rear ends would sit right in the impala without to much modification. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

If you have the 8.5" corporate rear end (IIRC you should- well, that or the rarer 12-bolt), keep it and swap out the carrier for an Eaton and a pair of 30 spline Strange or Moser axles. Yukon gears have had good reviews (I've never used them), or whatever brand you prefer. That's enough to keep up w/most anything you're likely to put to it unless you go to a trans brake and/or slicks a on a prepped track.

Thanks Cobalt.. I was just making sure there wasn't a big body with a good rear end like the Monte Carlo SS or Grand National in the G-Body Family. And the most racing that will be done will be street.

You could check out a Lock-Rite. You take out the guts of your single track carrier and put this in its place. Providing you have a good gear ratio already installed from the factory, I would get a good set of axles like suggested above and have some fun.
