71 nova power steering

I am building a steet rod with a 71 nova rear steer set up. I put a new pump on and and started my newly rebuilt 350, when the engine started for the first time the wheels turned all the way to the left and locked up. What did I do wrong? I have not got under the car yet to see where or if I disconnect the pitman arm to see if the wheels will turn back straight.

The wheels turned left all by them self?

Yes, once I started the car. I have a 70 nova subframe that came with the steering gear. This sat outside for a number of years and maybe the valves inside froze up? all the lines were hooked up correctly.

Wow, did you say gee or haw when it started?

I'd disconnect the hoses and try to move them back, look for binding in the cross linkage or idler off the frame rail. As far as the 'auto turn' thing, now that's interesting, I know the pressure and return lines are different so not much chance you have them crossed.

I have never heard of such a thing. I would have to guess the steering gear is full of junk or toast. I would also wonder about the new pump being contaminated now if that is the case..
