Be very careful to spot weld and not run a bead. Spread your spots about 2" apart then go back and fill inbetween with the same 2" spread. Hammering the metal into position as you go," It's better to have the metal too high so you can beat it down". Take your time and let the metal cool between spots with either compressed air or a wet rag works best. You will warp your top if you rush it and will wish you only had a leak. Either fab a piece or cut out a different one, it's all the same, not so hard, be patient and it will be fine. I use the thinest cut off wheel I can find. I also have sand blasted with a spot blaster the infected areas and slowly built up the area with weld,"Keep it cool". Figure out what caused it also...
