I have a 72 chev p u. It has bad rust around the windsheild inside the cab. It is around the top at the rubber seal all the way across the top. I need A new windsheild, and the rust is so bad its going to affect the seal install. Looks like I have bad problems. No rust any where else. I have A small wire welder. I can weld pretty good. What can I do. THANKS
a shrinker/stretcher would work great for that. you can fab a piece up and shape it to the existing piece while it's still in. Whatever you do make sure you measure good, especially the depth otherwise you might have problems putting your mouldings back on.
Take pictures first lots of pictures, use a 4 1/2 grinder w/ thin cut off wheels. Then cut only where you want to weld the new stuff to. Save what you cut off to use as a guide. Then only cut out the rusted stuff in like 6 or 8 ins. each.Don't be like me an work on it all day long, take your time, make it last a few weekends, enjoy the pain.

If you have access to a parts cab that is in good shape (& the price is right), the quickest and easiest would be to cut out a section of it and replace yours.
Be very careful to spot weld and not run a bead. Spread your spots about 2" apart then go back and fill inbetween with the same 2" spread. Hammering the metal into position as you go," It's better to have the metal too high so you can beat it down". Take your time and let the metal cool between spots with either compressed air or a wet rag works best. You will warp your top if you rush it and will wish you only had a leak. Either fab a piece or cut out a different one, it's all the same, not so hard, be patient and it will be fine. I use the thinest cut off wheel I can find. I also have sand blasted with a spot blaster the infected areas and slowly built up the area with weld,"Keep it cool". Figure out what caused it also...
