727 or 904

i have a 1974 duster the trans gets stuck in reverse i dropped the pan there is a rod that goes back in the tail shaft if i wiggle it it goes it to the other gears is there an adjustment for that rod can i do it with out dropping the valve body??? Im not sure if its a 727 or a 904 it has a 318 in it if that helps...

The only small block that got the 727 was the 340 I believe.

the 727 oil pan has a kick out on the side of the pan

the 904 pan has a square look with the corner cut off to make a hypotenuse

of a triangle.

this should help some.

oil pan is the easiest way to identify the 727 or 904.

the piston that actuates the reverse band is sticking may need a fluid change

or rebuild of the seals.

The rod that goes into the tail shaft is the park rod. If it is having problems moving back, it will jam the shifter.

how do you fix the rod??? i think it might be bent a little i don't know witch way to bend it though.. probably buy a new one right???

I believe the rod is hardened steel, and if it is bent I would get a new one rather than risk it cracking down the road if you straighten it. It is also a pretty tight fit. the issue would be how did it bend in the first place. Has the tranny been apart recently?

904 trans

the trans was rebuilt like 4 or 5 years ago the motor too an older guy had the car its a duster 1974. he put the motor in and trans did the body work then he got sick all timers deices then it just sat and now it mine im finishing where he left off... i took of the tail housing last night and the park lever is broking the lever that goes in the parking gear...i don't know how it broke but its sheared off some how so i was going to replace that and see how it works... do you think i should get the trans checked out??? it had no oil in it its very clean in side no metal shaving or anything the filter is new the valve body has marks on it like it was taking apart the little springs are new looking... what would you do???

take a couple photos, post them.clear photos are the norm,fuzzy pics are what

904 trans

found the problem, it was the parking pawl in the tail shaft housing it has a pin and a spring that holds it in right the pawl was sheered off on the end that goes in to the parking gear how does something like that brake???http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/newreply.php

Its a hardened roll pin,they brake if the car is put into park when still moving.

Check the paw for abuse.
