727 help please
have 327 with 727 transmission. Very tight fit in car and control cables and or rod not installed, and no space between engine and firewall to install. upon accelleration the trans drops out of low immediately and skips second.
Believe I can run a cable thru the passenger compartment to tranny but will admit I have no idea how this operates. Thanks for any and all assistance............ Al |

I am only assuming you are talking about a Chevy 327 with an adapted Chrysler Torqueflite 727 transmission. Is there enough room from the transmission shift shaft to fit a socket on to remove the shifter bracket? If so, you should be able to use almost any aftermarket shifter that is cable operated. If you prefer not to use an aftermarket floor shifter, the same concept can be adapted over to use the column shifter if vehicle is equipped. With a cable operated shifter the shifter mechanism can be mounted anywhere necessary, or unusual such as in the dash, as long as there is no binding in the cable. |

THe lack of a kickdown/throttle valve linkage that is causing the early shift you are describing, as those linkagees control shift points and firmness at ALL throttle positions.
You pretty much have two choices - Either find a way to hook up the linkage, or switch to a full manual valve body, which will eliminate the need for the linkage but you will have to make all shifts yourself. |

The kickdown determines shift point, it controls the mainline pressure. On some year 727 transmissions it also affects the kickdown point.
The kickdown HAS to be hooked up with an automatic shifting valve body. No kickdown hooked up will not only do EXACTLY what you describe, it will destroy your transmission with time. Lokar, among others, make a cable kickdown kit that fits just about anywhere. Easy to install too. |

Thanks to you all
Thanks for the info.
I was not entirely clear about the installation. The car has a hurst shifter...but no contgrol rod from the carb to the trans. The installation is so tight that it is impossible to get a control rod under the floorboard and up around the bell housing. however, I think it is possible to run a nylon tube up thru the floorboard, alonth the driveshaft tunnel and out thru the firewall to the carb. Question............does it have to be a rod, or can I use a cable. Thanks again......Al |
