I posted in the electrical forum that my son's '73 Monty backed fired and died at 65 mph, then wouldn't start. It ended up that the timing chain gear's nylon gave way. My son replaced the timing chain and put everything back together, then tried starting it..but wouldn't start. It wanted to start but just sputtered. I checked the compressions and appears that there's a couple of cylinder with 30 lbs or so compression. This tells me that it bent some of valves. With 118K miles on the engine, I adviced my son that it would be cheaper to yank the engine and tranny out and get a new crate engine from the dealer and replace the 350 turbo with a rebuilt 700r4. I guess the old addge is true,..."when it rains, it pours".

well if cost is not an option go ahead and pull the motor and tranny i dont know if you were waiting for an excuse to update the drive train but you dont HAVE to pull the tranny right now. before i called up to order my crate motor i would check with a few machine shops and price a rebuild of what you have. if your block is good you could get a good price on a rebuild. good luck

I don't think a low compression 350 is gonna do that. I've lost several timing chains on those and never had a valve hit. Before yanking the engine, pull the valve covers and take a look at the offending cylinders hardware. A stuck valve is going to show up visually. Besides if it is an intake shouldn't it should backfire? Or an open exhaust 'pop'?
It sounds like he's a tooth off on the gears. But then I've been wrong lots....... [ October 31, 2002: Message edited by: slider ]</p> |
