73 roadrunner ignition switch wiring ?

i had to rebuild my steering column and found that the ignition switch( the one inside the column with wires) was cracked . i re painted all the parts and am ready to put it back together , i have a new in box switch that is pretty much identical with the exception of one wire . a single orange wirethat is beside the two red wires . it is connected to the plug and is about 8" long . my original one doesnthave this wire. all the orange wires that i see on the complete orriginal wiring harness are for lights ( such as dash and shifter ) my friend says to just tape the end and forget it , i say no, can anyone help , i really want to knowwhat this wire is for. car is a 73 roadrunner originally a small block car , column shift , standard gauges. ive re done all of that . big block , floor shift , ralley pack gauges. thanks in advance

A quick search found this site but I don't see the colours you are talking about. Might help to go to RockAuto and look at the switch for your car. Often they have instructions available with them. They do mention a red wire.

Glad you got her figured out. I'm not there yet. Changing a '77 Ford pickup to an '82 Crown Vic column where all switches are on the column. Probably gonna be a nightmare trying to figure the wiring on that, but I like that kind of puzzle.
