74 chevy deulxe long bed cross members help!

hi im buying a 74 chevy custom deluxe long bed from a guy but the 3 cross members on the underside of the box are totally rotten, the bed floor is fine but the cross members are done, what else could i use to replace the cross members? truck is already gonna be saftied by a " special machanic" so micky mousin it is ok, would i just be able to use 3 peices of wood the same length and width as the crossmembers and just drill a hole through the wood and bed and bolt them on? never owend a truck befor so this is all new to me, do cross members just support the bed? like give it somthing to lay on? or are cross members real important and should be done right? or can i just micky mouse it somehow? im not rich so id prefer to micky mouse it, anyone got any ideas on what i could use or do for cheap?

Rect tubing.

you have to unbolt everything to fix it, I would pull the box off, turn it over and use new rectangular tubing, power wire wheel or sand blast to get good tack welds. A lot of bigger farm trucks used wood crosmembers under a solid flat bed but the wood was for spacers, and they used hard wood that wouldn't rot as fast .

While wood will work to support the bed (at least to the point that the wood broke), the cross members hold the chassis square as well as support the bed so if possible replace them w/similar cross members to what it used originally.

lmctruck.com sells new ones or you could use square tubing
you could also check junk yards as the same bed and x-members were used from 54 to the mid 80s
those x-members are the only thing that hold the bed on and support load weight
for safety's sake of the guy behind you don't use wood unless you go big
the x-members are and odd ball size like 2.25 or there abouts
so you would have to shim the rear (tailgate) x-member
rather than mickey mouse anything, just take the bed off
