74 pinto - engine cutting out

Car is a 74 ford pinto station wagon. Totally stock (for now) with a 2.3L 4 cylinder with points type ignition. Has new set of points (problem existed before the points were changed). The problem is that the engine jerks randomly ("fish bites"), sometimes several times in a row, other times several seconds apart or even not at all for a little while. It acts as tho the engine is stalling for a split second and coming back on. Since it has points there is no control module or magnetic pickup to be causing the problem. It DOES seem to happen under hard throttle, indicating possible fuel problem, but i replaced the filter, and checked the fuel pump volume and pressure and everything was good there.

I don't really know what to look for next.

Anyone else got any ideas ?

If it has alot of miles on it, install some platinum plugs in it and see if that helps. They made a big difference for me in a 305 with symptoms such as yours.

Years ago I bought a 76 with a similar problem. The guy sold it to me for $100 because a mechanic said it needed a new engine. I would buy a manual and check the timing. Most mechanics don't know how to check it because you have to know where to look inorder to line up the timing marks. The timing belt has probably stretched and the timing will be way off. That car was the best deal I ever made, it had new tires and was in mint condition. Good luck!

check your ground wire system. my wife had a pinto wagon that had electrical gremlins; lights flashing, engine cutting out, instrument cluster warning lights coming on, etc... i drove it and noticed that moving the clutch in and out would affect it (cable clutch). new ground wires fixed the problem.
