76 corvette 350/350 shift cable adjustment

A little help please, Ive gone to u tube and a couple of other sites but im still perplexed on this shift cable adjustment thing. Both eng and tranny are out of the 76 vette. I have the original shift cable and an aftermarket bracket. Ive got the cable in the tranny and routed up to and pushed into the bracket. The long slotted hole is positioned on the carburator. I understand that as the accelerator is depressed it pulls open the detent. How do I adjust from here? bill

Manually open the carb fully. Check the slot to ensure that the carb is not restricted by the end of the slot. At WOT you should be able to pull the kickdown cable and see it's got a little more left in that slot. Adjust so it does, and you should be good to go.
