76 L48 vs L82

A little help if you guy's might know. I was given a 76 Corvette motor and trans out of my sister's Corvette. It is a 350 with a 3970010 casting number and according to all the engine threads this engine was either a L48 or L82 motor. The L48 a 180 HP 2 bolt main with a 350 trans or a L82 210 HP motor with a 4 bolt main and a 400 trans. I believe my brother in law said it has a 4 bolt mains so is there any way to tell by numbers which motor it is? L48 or L82? It came with a 350 trans so I assumed it was the L48 but with him saying it was a 4 bolt I was wondering. Bill

The L-48 and L82 look pretty much the same externally.

The L-82 has forged flat top pistons. Should have a forged crank and should have but may not have 4 bolt mains. The L-82 cam has .450"in .460" exhaust lift. The L-48 cam is .390"in .410" ex

They share the same (crappy smog) heads but the L-82 will have 2.02x 1.60 valves and screw in studs and guide plates.

Either way:

Ditch the heads and cam if you want to go faster than stock.
Lots of good aftermarket stuff to sweeten it up.

suffix code

The suffix code is V0615CHD. I didn't see the CHD code for 76. I just went out and pulled the intake manifold and was horrified as to what I found. The valley had no oil and looked like it never had oil, It was clean as a new block. My brother in law had replaced all the bearings Cam,crank and rods and various other stuff on the bottom end and had it sitting for about a year. He gave it to my brother and my brother had some work done on the heads and had put it in a 55 chevy but never finished the chevy. This was back in 93 or 94. I had gone down to see him and he had started it up for me and it sounded pretty good and had run it for only a minute or so. He had it sitting since then untill he gave it to me two years ago for my 30 coupe. Its been sitting for quite a while but you'ed think it would have had some sign of oil in the valley. I don't think he had primed the pump before he had started it up. Im not sure if he had started it up after that or not, Any way Im taking it all apart to see what kind of dammage if any was done.

I don't see CHD either for any Yr. Vette.

Code- Year- CID-- Vehicle--- HP-- RPO- Trans--- Carb-- Comments
CHD-- 73--- 307-- Nova---- 115- L14-- Manual- 2Brl---- A.I.R.
CHD-- 73--- 307-- Chevelle- 115- L14-- Manual- 2Brl---- A.I.R.
Are you positive it's CHD?

CHB-- 75--- 350- Corvette- 165- L48-- TH350- 4-Brl
CHR-- 75--- 350- Corvette- 205- L82-- TH350- 4-Brl
