76 vette

i uncovered my 76 vette and lo and behold, the paint was half fallen off, down to the jellcoat.the car has been painted about 5 times and it has a lot of cracking in the paint.should i just grab the 36 grit and start from scratch or is there a less aggresive method>

First of all, welcome aboard, this is a great site and I'm sure you will find a lot of valuable information here.

To answer your question about attacking your Corvette with 36 grit to remove what is left of your paint, the simple answer is NO.

If, as you mentioned, 1/2 of the paint has fallen off and you said that the car had 5 paint jobs on it...the first thing I would try is to try taking a razor blade to the paint that is left. This will tell you where the adhesion problem is...1 layer, 2 layers, 3, 4 layers of paint, primer not adhering to the Gel Coat. Once you figure out where the problem is, more advice can be given.

Hope this helps.
