76 Vette Starter Questions

have installed remote solonoid on this car (ford solonoid).
when removing wires from starter found the following on the always hot large starter terminal.
1. heavy, red w/fusable link.
2. black 16 ga w/fusable link.
these 2 were connected with large ring terminal
3. 18? ga black wire, approx 12" from terminal (there was not a terminal on this wire, just what remained of some kind of connector) (also found NO remains of a connector on any of the starter terminals) connects to 3 small black wires. based on the location of this wire I can't see how it would reach anything except the starter. dont think would go to ign terminal on the starter as this is a hei car (no ballast resistor).
this just leaves the start terminal or the heavy batt hot terminal.
connected to hot thru ammeter and could get no draw, tried accessories and nothing.

any ideas what this could be, am hesitant to try trial and error to find out and dont have wiring diagram for car.

thanks in advance for any help.

Wires

[color=yellow][size=2]Doc Here

Look at the Battery Box Behind the driver's seat, You should See a Single terminal with one or two wires on it, That is your main power to the Car (from the Links), Sounds like The wire you found, That "seems" to go nowhere may to go there.

Also, Be sure your link wires are on the correct side of the Ford Solenoid, the "Hot" Cable side. you might find it unhooked or on the wrong side of the Ford Relay If you already moved them.

Here is the location from a photo I snapped off one of the Vettes, Follow that wire back from there, On this one, it Goes under the car, comes out at about the Differential Well and goes forward to the starter.

The Logical Flow for the Remote Solenoid Should Be, if your using in conjunction with the General Mystery Solenoid, (Both Solenoids)

Just move the "Start Wire" from the GM solenoid To the "S" on the Ford Solenoid, One Big terminal Will Come from a Fusible link, (hot at all times) And the other Big terminal on the Ford Solenoid to the Solenoid Energize Terminal at the GM Solenoid. Leave the Wires At the big Terminal on the GM Starter As is...(Links and Battery)

Have The Diagram For that Corvette, But Scanner is down (missing driver) But It shows No different than any other GM starter System. If you want one, I'll try to find the driver and upload a scan for it. Or the local library Reference section might be a little faster..

Hope it helps!
BTW, Why the Remote start?

Hey Doc,

My battery box is nothing like the photo, just +&- batt cables.

The starter rleay change is due to bb w/headers and fried and or brittle wires to the starter as I attempted to get a battery hot for electric fan conversion. The whole story would take half a book, however if interested will give you all the gory details.

I have located both of the connections (w/fusable links) from the starter hot, plus the battery cable.

THE MYSTERY WIRES WERE HANGING AT APPROX THE REAR OF THE STARTER, THEY ARE 18 OR 20 GA, BLACK IN COLOR, FOLLOWED UP THE LOOM APPROX 12" AT THAT POINT THERE WAS A CRIMP CONNECTION (UNINSULATED) WHERE THIS SPLIT INTO 3 BLACK WIRES (APPROX 20GA) AND WENT THRU THE FIREWALL OR INTO A DIFFERENT LOOM (SINCE IS BEHIND THE ENGINE HARD TO SEE WHICH). UNDER THE CAR THEY WOULD REACH FOREWARD TO APPROX THE FRONT OF THE SOLONOID, AND REARWARD TO APPROX 2" PAST THE BELLHOUSING. ON THE END OF THE WIRE IS WHAT APPEARS TO BE THE REMAINDER OF A CRIMP TERMINAL. THERE WAS NO REMNANTS OF A CRIMP TERMINAL FOUND ON ANY OF THE STARTER TERMINALS.

If you have a wiring diagram and can either attach or fax it to me that would be great. Am also trying to determine how to size the fusable links for replacement as they are heat damaged from the headers also.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, finally found a scanner driver.

Here it is...you might have to enlarge it... had to reduce it to upload.
