77 Ford 400 Build

Curious if anybody knows if a 351C piston will fit into a 400M? They both have 4 inch bores. The compression heights, (distance from wrist pin centerline to top of the piston), are roughly the same. I called the Summit Tech line and a gentleman said he'd be worried about the piston skirt coming down and smacking a crank counter weight? Other than that he felt confident that the piston would work.

Anyways, I've read 2 different articles that said it would work but have been unable to identify the authenticity of the writers so I don't know if they have just book knowledge or practical? Any help would be much apprecaited before I spend a bunch of green to know for myself.

From what I recall, some will, some won`t. I am not a Ford man, but I still have the article asking the same question in a mid 80`s hot rod magazine, and there reply was the same. You`ll have to do a mock up assembly to make sure the skirts don`t hit the counter weights, you have to remember the 400 Ford has a 4 inch stroke, roughly half a inch longer than a 351, so a mock up assembly would be wise insurance. on chevy stroker engines we settle for at least .050 clearence, so I`m thinking it would be the same for Ford engines. Perhaps some of the other more knowledgeable Ford guys on here can answer the question better than I can.
