78 chevy 4x4 with a 12 bolt rearend questions

I have a 78 chevy 4x4 with a 12 bolt rearend and I need to replace the carrier and I guess there are three different sizes, like 8.625, 8.75, and 8.825? I can't remember exactly. How do I tell what I have or does it matter? Please help! Thank you

There is a 2,3,and 4 series carrier for the 12 bolt truck differential.
You can tell them apart by what gear ratio is installed.
2.56 and 2.73 is 2 series
2.76-3.42 is 3
3.73-4.10 is 4

The Chevy truck 12 bolt has a 8 7/8 ring gear. There is only one Chevy truck 12 bolt. There are no other sizes. There are 3 different series differentials like Imsport said. Be sure that you get the correct one for the gear ratio that you have. You must check the backlash before you remove your differential and set the backlash back the same when you install the new differential.
