Post 78 T-Bird

The firing order is messed up. The engine is an 302 2bl. 8 cylinder. Could someone guide me on how to correct the problem? Give details on the distributor cap as I look at it please.

the firing order for your engine should be cast onto the block somewhere. Can you find TDC (top dead center)? pull the plug on your #1 cylinder (front, driver's side). Put your finger in the hole and turn the engine over by hand until you feel the compression stroke. when the piston is at TDC, stop. Pull the distributor cap, the rotor will be pointing at #1 wire. make sure this wire goes to correct plug, note rotation of rotor, and then put on each wire to each respective plug depending on what your firing order is. hope this helps.

First of all johnny, number 1 on a Ford 302 is front passenger side. The firing order is 15426378 and goes counterclockwise. 1,2,3,4 front to back passenger side. 5,6,7,8 front to back driver side. If the distributor cap isn't marked for number 1 wire than pull out the front plug passenger side (#1) and stick finger in hole, turn over by hand with socket on crank bolt till compression blows finger out. That's compression stroke #1 cylinder. Then use timing marks on crank balancer to put it at TDC (line up timing tab to 0deg. on balancer). Number 1 wire should be the terminal distributor rotor is pointing to. Then just hook up the rest of your wires counterclockwise in the right order 15426378. This should be enough to get the engine running, then you can set timing with a light. If this isn't enough just let us know or you can write to me at dmorris1200@hotmail.com . Hope this helps, Don.
