79 corvette 350 prject help

Looking for some help here guys i have a 350 out of a 79 corvette I'm trying to rebuild any good ideas I'm on a tight budget but want to do it right and get all i can out of the motor this is my first project

The biggest road block to power with this 1979 motor is the stock cylinder heads.
find better heads before you spend $ 1 on anything else.
What is the cylinder head casting number? (under the valve cover)

Next measure the diameter of the outlet of the stock corvette exhaust manifolds.
If not 2 1/2" get the good corvette ram horn manifolds (1964 to 1967) or get exhaust headers.
If using a cat converter convert to two 2.5" in out high flow cats. "MagnaFlow- Carsound"
and true 2 1/2" dual exhaust.

Summit sells a complete engine rebuild kit w new flat top pistons for $200

You need to know the new bore size and the main and connecting rod bearing undersize.

Get your block bored and honed and the crank reground and the rods resized.
Then order the rebuild kit with the right pistons and bearings

The block decks may need a cut.

My corvette is 1981,so I can help you with your can of worms,lol. First,what do you want from the car? Do you have 2.7 or 3.08 gears? is it a standard? do you have a single fibre glass rear leaf spring? Do you like the way the car handles? Are your trailing arms stock original? what hood do you have?do you have emmission concerns? There are not very many off the shelf headers for that car.do you have side pipes?

I meant to post bore the block and just rough hone it.
The bore will still be smaller than the new oversize piston and still needs further honing. If it won't go +.030" and get clean bores,,, go to +.040" bore.

You only bore the block 4.024" to 4.026" over and hone the last few thou
That leaves you lots of room to hone nice straight cylinders.

for a +.030" piston.

A torque plate is nice.
Finish hone the cylinders to the final size to fit each piston to a cylinder, when you get the pistons. The instructions show where on the piston to mic it. And give a piston wall clearance spec.

and give a ring end gap range.
I got busy and forgot to edit the post.

The nice thing about the summit engine rebuild kit pistons besides being cheap are they have the correct 1.56" pin height.

462624 Are the numbers under the valve covers along with another one that i can make out on either head and this motor unfortunately is not going back into the vett its being dropped into a 93 firebird

What gear and transmission are you going to use?

Are you looking for a street engine with decent power and good mpg?

Or are you trying to make a lot of power and mpg is not important?

Are you going to use the stock 93 efi system? Concerned with car emissions inspection?

As you already heard, the stock heads need to go away if you are serious about making power. But stock heads can be used if you on a budget. Maybe a little port bowl work around the valves will be enough for now.

What is the exhaust system like in the car now? Are you planning to use headers?

I am planning to use headers mpg i dont care about i have a gas saver for that looking to get as much power as possible looking for ideas on how to build and what i should use

Phills projects.its really important to know what hood you are using or if you dont mind cutting a hole in the hood?My 81 vette now has a 434 inch small block with a solid roller cam,custom built step headers,mandrel bent exhaust,replaced read springs,gears,centre section,1/2 shafts,drive shaft,transmission (4 spd to 5 spd)bell housing,flywheel,hood,shocks,suspension parts especially rear trailing arms as they can separate with huge increase in power.I have a damaged rr 1/4 as proof.

What was in my car was a mild 270 ish ho o/hauled 350.It made 205 to the rear wheels and 280 torque,measured on a dynojet dyno. I spent a lot more than my car is worth on upgrades,what do you want with your car?

I can not agree with this statement. Suppose you buy a .030 piston rebuild kit then have the block bored and it won't clean up at .030. Are you going to sleeve the block or bore to .040 to see if it cleans up? Then have to send the .030 kit back and buy a .040 kit. Phill is building the 350 Cid the motor for a 93 Firebird.

CDminter,fbird knows what I mean.He is very good with his posts and I just pointed out what is really just a typo.

before you bore a block you clean,measure and inspect it.After measuring you will know if the block will clean up at 030. The reason you need the pistons in hand is because, there can be as much as .0015 difference in piston sizes in the same box. all of the bores are finished to have the same piston to wall clearance based on the pistons individual size. Same care is taken for crank grinding.These are the very basics of blue printing an engine. quality parts plus precision assembly = long life and surprisingly more power.

decide what you want the engine to do when finished? Do you need forged pistons or will cast be ok.remember the hood clearance will hurt total HP.If the engine is stripped down to bare block the machine shop can do a quick visual check and inside mic the bores for taper and check for major scratches.If its good to go,get it cleaned and discuss how much machining you want or need,IE squaring and decking and boring.
Thens lets figure out what parts will give you what you want for power and fit the car. Headers for high HP vettes are not off the shelf units. and other questions I previously posted
