79 GMC Sierra Grande step side.
Picked up a 79 GMC Sierra Grande step side for a good price partly due to rust damage along the bottom rim and in some areas like the door and engine compartment. I have been told I need to save it, but like so many others, I have a smaller budget than it deserves.
I started with an oil change and and spark plugs. I replaced a fuel hose and cleaned the carb. The stalling and refusal to start wasn't completely fixed but at least with a bit of gas in the carb I can get it started.
The one thing going for me here is that I am a professional airbrush artist. So I intend to repaint it entirely freehand(Rat Fink style) and make it a magazine piece. I am looking forward to the challenge of foregoing the repair work to the rust holes by sealing them and including them in the overall paintjob.
Any advice you can give on improving this project would be fantastic! Thanks.

The more time goes by , the more I like these GM trucks. They look real nice with a wood bed. The chance to have a v8 is worth while if you drive it around. 305's can be free and have that pickup truck sound.

Magazine piece, you have to do some patching. These trucks are still pretty reasonable cost wise. No idea where thier value will go. I got mine for $1900, and it had not one spot of rust and a new 305. In my photos/journal. Cheap to replace parts. The whole brake system can be done under a couple hundred. Disassemble and coat the new accessory pumps. A new din style deck and 6x9 pillar plates behind the seats and 6 1/2 kicker panels up front for the full stereo sounds. Envoy drive shafts are long enough and aluminum ,but most important cheap. If you like that sort of thing. AL driveshaft looks good next to a AL exhaust pipes. Give it a candy cane swirl paint job . Display with mirrors.

A fat period CB with Pa is fitting for the vehicle.

Ultra wide rear view.

I stopped on mine cause the kids on the block keep shooting it with pellet guns.

a progress shot of the door.
a shot of the door before being primed and painted.
Here is a progress shot of the door after starting the painting.

Another progress shot. This shows a portion that was very difficult to treat for rust. I ground it, sanded, buffed, sprayed with Rustoleum rust treatment and then grey primer.
Then I started in with the airbrush.
Sorry for the bad pic, it was getting late when I finished this. But I got this portion done in one day. I live in Portland Ore and it could rain any minute no matter what the news says.
I started to worry that this damage may be too extensive, any thoughts?

Really big fender flares?

I like flares but I don't think they would match the style in this case.
Here is a progress shot. I am thinking of using light blue flames to frame and blend. This section still needs a day of detailing and gloss.
