79 Maliu rear end swap

I have a 79 Malibu with the stock 10 bolt rearend. Gear ratio and size unknown. My question is will the rearend from an 86 Z-28 fit in the car? I know there is the difference between the four link and the two-link with the panard bar. The reason for the swap is the Z's rear is a disc posi unit. Can anyone help me with this question?

Have you tried to see if the disc set up will swap over to the malibu rr end? I tried it on my 68 camaro and it worked sweet. I got my set up from an 88 or so IROC and it should be the same as the 86. I have a rearend with 3.42 gears with an eaton posi unit out of my old 81 El Camino w/ about 5000 miles on it for $500.00 if you're interested. Good luck

The suspension set up is different and they wont swap out without problems. Not sure about swaping the disk brake set. Go to elcamino central website alot of info for rearend swaping.

It will not fit without serious modification. You would need to cut off the camaro spring perches and weld on the malibu 4 link mounting brackets. This requires a jig because everything has to be geometrically correct.

If you're making about 350 hp or less you can just upgrade the 7.5" 10 bolt malibu rearend that's in the car already. Change the gears and add a posi unit. If you're making serious power and running slicks then you need to upgrade to a 8.5" 10 bolt or ford 9". There are factory 8.5" 10 bolts that'll fit your G body. They came in monte carlo SS and grand nationals. They're hard to find and demand pretty good money. The other option is getting a 8.5" or ford 9" made to fit your application. This is the most expensive route but it's possible to get a really strong rearend built.
good luck,
dh
