79 Suburban Ball Joint change Help!!!
This is going to be my first attempt at a ball joint change. The Upper ball joint broke the other night on my drive home from work. took it to a garage, they tried to Rob me blind, so now I am going to do it in my snowy (canadian) driveway. Its going to be done saterday and I want to be smooth and prepared !!! (for a change)
Rivet/bolt removal? (do I need Air tools?)
One of my buddies said I may need a ball joint presser?
Take a angle grinder and grind down the top part of the rivet. Be careful remember safety first. Once you remove all of the rivet material ONLY!take something to punch them out. Big phillips screw driver and a big hammer. Then the replacements should have nuts and bolts to bolt them in. Good luck!
There's more to it than just removing the old ball joint and replacing with a new one. In addition, if the top ball joints are bad, more than likely, the lower ones also need replacing. It's admirable that you're willing to do this repair in your driveway especially in the cold snowy weather. It'll take you several hours.. provided that you have the proper tools, to replace the ball joint. Best advice I can give you is to get a Haynes Repair Manual and read the procedure and list the special tools you'll need.
I don't want to discourage you, but you need to be aware of the task you're about to undertake. Good luck.
