79 TA, 10 Bolt rear end, highway gears, looking to step up

So I've got 2:73's I want to step up to be buddy's scamp with 3:55s. So after a bunch of procrastinating I go to see what a shop would charge me to put in different gears. I don't know anything about gears, no one I know knows, and I don't have the time to learn right now. So I ask the shop what he would charge me, he tells me that my 2:73 rear end cannot be changed to anything above a 3, because it won't fit. I've never heard of this. Why couldn't I buy gears and stuff off summit for a 10 bolt, and have him install them?

You need a new carrier to go to those gears.

The carrier break is 2.56-2.73 on an 8.5" 10-bolt, and that's the only rear end they used on a '79 Firebird. Your carrier is "3-series", and will work fine with 3.55's.
