8.2 and 8.5

I was wondering what the differences of the 8.2 and the 8.5 rear ends besides the ring gear size and the year camaro/firebirds they came with. Externally they look the same and I was wondering if you could put a posi unit from an 8.2 into an 8.5 housing and vise versa. My problem is that I have a 69 camaro with the 8.2 rear end and the housing is cracked and leaks oil. Im parting out an 81 camaro with the 8.5 rear end and I want to put the guts of the 8.2 into the 8.5 housing and bolt the 8.5 rear end into the 69 camaro. Can I do this??

no you cannot swap parts between the two. the only thing that will interchange is the diff. cover, brake backing plates, and some other little things. if you measure closely you will see that the diff. housing is actually smaller all the way around. also, the spring mount pads are farther out and at a different angle on the 70 up camaro than on the 67-69 rear. you can bolt the later rear in there but the springs will be in a bind because of this difference. the later rear is also approx 1 1/2" wider over all which could cause tire/fender clearance problems on a 69. the best solution to a 67-69 8.2 camaro rearend is to find a 8.5" housing out of a 71-73 nova as they are the same width, use the same spring centers and angles and are a direct bolt in. hope this helps.. scott

hey, thanks alot for the reply. I found out that the 8.5 out of my 81 camaro is in fact wider over all and the springs didn't line up on the mounts. I tryed switching the gears but the whole bearing assembly on the pinion gear was larger on the 8.5". It looked like the ring gear assembly would fit in but I didn't try because of the pinion gear. Im going to go ahead and get the 8.2 housing welded and hopefully it will work. Thank you very much for the reply.

According to Chevy High Performance magazine.
The GM 8.5 " 10 Bolt rear end is nearly as strong as a 12 bolt. The 12 bolt Ring gear diameter is 8.5" vs the 10 bolt 8.375". The pinion gear diameter is the same for both 10 & 12 Bolt rear ends. The 8.5" 10 Bolt rear end was nearly universally used in GM cars and trucks from 1971 -1996. So just look for a 8.5" 10 Bolt and most wrecking yards should be able to tell you which ones will fit your application. I put an Eaton Posi and 3.73 gears in my 1976 Monte Carlo and the rear end has been working well. Hope this helps.
