8.2 pontiac axle help

I have a 1969 8.2 pontiac axle that I'd like to upgrade with a posi. A fellow club member has an NOS posi unit in his garage that he no longer needs but he doesn't know if it will fit. He thinks it was for a 8.2 axle. We are communicating over the telephone and by email as he lives 300 miles away so that makes physical inspection difficult. My shop manual doesn't help.

The posi unit box is GM branded has the number 1#1394098 printed on it. It is an auburn style unit with cones.

It looks as though it is the same but the carrier bearings appear to be different. Mine are the same on both sides, his are a different size. 1 9/16 inch and 1 11/16 inch with the larger on the ring gear side. Mine look like they are 1 11/16 inch on both sides.

Does anyone know
- why the bearings are different
- could this posi be for a chevy 8.2 axle
- what were the internal differences between BOP and chevy 8.2, if any?

Thanks

The only thing I could find defining the difference in the "Chevy" and "Pontiac" 8.2 inch are the pinion shaft spline counts

The "Chevy" 8.2 has 25 splines on the pinion shaft, and the "Pontiac" 8.2 inch has 27 splines on the pinion shaft.

The "Chevy" 8.2 has a pinion shaft diameter of 1.438", and I could not find a measurement listed for the "Pontiac" 8.2

The Timken bearing kits for each have a different part number and price but contain nothing else in the listing other than the same contents for both kits.

Sounds like it is for a 12 bolt rear.

71 Lemans 8.2 with a 12 bolt lists 2 different differential bearings, with the one on the right having the same part# as most other axles, including the BOP 10 bolt. Other than that, I have no idea if you could make it fit your housing.

Thanks for the info.

Pontiacs had 12 bolts after 1970 I think when the 455 was intorduced. But am I right in thinking that the 12 bolt wouldn't be an 8.2 inch ring gear, are they 8.875 ish?

The posi unit in question is dimensionally the same as my open unit apart from this asymetrical bearing issue.

Can anyone else add to this? Muich appreciated
