8.5" spider gears

I have a 69 Nova with a 78 Trans Am rear end under it, which is an 8.5" The other day I was making a pass and when I went from first to second it blew up both spider gears. I don't have money for a posi or money for someone to instal it, so I want to find another set of spider gears to go in it. I called GM and they want $350 for them!

So, I have a friend who has a 92 chevy p/u. He said I can pull the gears out of that. I'm guessing it has an 8.5" and they will fit my car.

Will I have any issues using these gears?

Thanks
Sean S.

The 1988-1998 trucks have 8.5 inch axle, BUT an axleshaft spline count of 30.

Your 1978 Trans-Am 8.5 inch axle has shafts with 28 splines.

Trucks using the 8.5 inch axle from 1987 DOWN have the 28 spline axleshafts.

I found a site that lists new axleshafts for under $100 but you would need to know your axleshaft lengths to match them up.

I still have my doubts as to the 92 truck spiders matching the 78 carrier perfectly otherwise, they MAY match without problem.

If you're talking about the side gears, the ones that the axle goes into, they won't work. The 8.5 rears went to a 30-spline axle in '89, and the older ones had 28. I don't know if the pinions (the smaller ones on the cross-shaft) will work or not.

I'm sorry I thought I had my terminology correct.

I am refering to the 2 smaller gears that are held in by the 'cross-shaft', not the 2 gears that are connected to the axles.

Think those will fit? Or did the size of the side gears change when they changed the amount of splines on the axle?

Thanks
Sean S.
