8.8" Ford axle question...

Hi All,

If I were to have 9" ends installed on a 31 spline 8.8" axle, what would I spec for axles? Does a standard 9" axle fit the 8.8" side gear splines? And if this were done, would standard 8.8" brakes work?

TIA!

Russ

You would need custom axles.
Moser is the cheapest and they're easy to deal with.
It does take some fairly accurate measurements but a good tape measure will do the job.
To reuse the existing brakes you just have to make the new axle have the same offset from the braket or backing plate.

9 ends.

Ford used 3 different ends on the 9 rears, one of the patterns is the same as the 8.8

Moser makes housing ends for the 8.8 that use the press on 9 inch Ford axle bearings and the stock Mustang 8.8 brakes. They also have housing ends with all of the 9 inch Ford brake patterns, so there is a large selection. If you think you might upgrade the brakes later on then using one of the 9 inch ends would be a good idea because there are so many brake optinos for the 9 inch Ford. Have the axle hang out set for the housing ends and brakes that you will be using. Moser knows what these are, so they can be a big help in making that decision and getting the measurements right. http://www.moserengineering.com/othe...sing-ends.html

I would most likely keep the Explorer brakes or upgrade to Mustang stuff. I really just wanted to eliminate the C-clips without using a (leaky) kit. So, I can add the Moser #7700 9" ends after narrowing and then spec custom axles with the 8.8" splines and 9" bearings?

If you are using Explorer brakes then you will probably need the 7750 housing ends. The 8.8 and 9 inch 31 splines are the same. Yes, Moser will make the axles with 31 splines and make them fit the press on 9 inch Ford axle bearings. Tell them what brakes you are using and they will make the axle hang out fit those brakes. Just be sure that you cut the housing correctly so that the axles fit. If you cut too much or not enough then the axles will not go in all the way or there will not be enough splines in the axle gears.
