8.8 ford vs 8.5 chevy

Which rear would you consider stronger?? In stock form and or modified.

And has anyone modified an 8.8 ford to fit in a g-body???

The 8.8" ford is basically a stolen copy of the 12 bolt GM, so the 8.8 gets the nod for strength. The 8.5 is only a touch weaker than a 12 bolt though.

For ease of transplant I would do an 8.5 with a couple upgrades. I think you'll get the same strength with less money in the long run.

You can find a bolt-in 8.5" rear from '84 - '87 turbo-Buick and Olds 442 cars. The Olds had a 3.73 gear while the Buicks had a 3.42 gear. It's unlikely you'll find one in a boneyard so they'll cost you, (usually around $800.00) but 90% of them had a posi unit...

It depends on what 8.5 and what 8.8...

Older (pre~88) 8.5's came with 28 spline axles. Newer ones (like the 2000 Blazer one in the back end of my truck) had 30-splines.

8.8's came with both 28 and 31 spline axles depending on what it was under.

well in that case I would have to say both with 28 spline. This isn't something that I am trying to do at the moment but thought it would be interesting conversation.
