8" and 9" drum brakes
Will the backing plates off a 8" ford fit on a 9" ford rear end?

 Some will....most will not.....  The 8" comes with a 2 and 53/64" OD rear wheel bearing. Some 9" Fords do also. The larger 3 and 5/32" OD rear wheel bearing is very common in the 9". And then there is the 'Torino' style.  .

Like Deuce said, depends on the rears. You can see in the attached picture that I simply left my backing plates hanging when I swapped out my 8inch for a 9inch rear. Mine worked out no problem, I even used the axles out of my old 8inch rear in the 9inch rear as they were the same.
