8-stack TT sb Chevy

Hey all,

I'm looking at buying a hp 290 crate motor (or building one, not too sure yet) and adding an 8 stack intake system then adding a few turbos. Not looking for big power, just a cool street engine with a bit of a mechanic wow. Has anyone seen something like this before? I've been looking at a few older hilborne systems (I like the look of older stuff, trying to keep a 50-60's period look) but some advise against mechanical injection systems for street use for lack of fuel control? Alternatively there are elec injection systems.... For 6,500

use a modern electronic fuel injection system that uses the fake stacks for looks. a few turbos?1 or 2 is enough

An eight stack intake system...and then adding "a few turbos"?

Do some leg work, read up on intake systems and turbos, then decide what you want to do, how much money is in the kitty and how much money you're willing to spend.

fake looks

I found a 671 gimmy on a wrecked barge, it had spent quite a few years under water, I was thinking about taking out the guts and setting it over my 4 barrel on the T bucket, A local racer came by and we pulled it apart, the insides were still good so he traded me out of it, hand polished it and put it on his 409. I have seen a few fake injector stacks, looks good for the WOW factor,

Yup, a few as in two.. No real budget and I wouldn't bother with fake stuff. The turbos, at the end of the day are no bit deal but I'd really like to use an 8stack like the older type mentioned in my previous post. Has anyone used a mechanical system on pump gas for the street?

enderle mechanical injectors with pills for metering,,,,blah blah blah.On the street,yes Ive seen them. Usually attached to cars owned by older guys that raced alcohol injected front engine rails. With the years of past experience,they can tune them.If you are younger,then get electronic injection and use something you are more familiar with,,,,a computer.

I believe the point he was trying to illustrate is that you have to have years of experience tuning and using mechanical fuel injection to make it street friendly. Running an EFI-based one isn't going to be much different as far as the learning curve if you're not computer literate.

Honestly the fake hillborn stack cover seems to be better for your purposes. If it's just for looks, get one for looks. If you want one for performance, then I'd suggest putting money and time into a lot more research before you purchase something.

Cheers Vulk,

It's really both. They look, sound and perform great - that's why I want to run one. For cosmetic purposes the older units just look stacks better. 6 of 1 for performance because realistically I'm starting from nothing anyway. I don't mind putting time & learning into it. It's been a long term ground up build anyway.



They just look too cool!

One of the problems with mechanical injection is using a squirt of fuel in the injectors to start the engine. Do you really want a system that requires a helper to get started each time?
They do make electronic systems to adapt the old Hilborn units to run with a hidden controller, and they work well, and look good too.
I don't know of any way to feed 8 injector stacks with a turbo? Can't even visualize how that would be workable.

There have been many engines that were/are run with Hilborn/Turbos/Superchargers (as far back as the 60's)-I think it would be a pricey unit, but it sure would look cool! Every one I've seen has been for competition use though-

As for running a mechanical Hilborn on the street, it can be done, but it is a pain-Hilborns were always known to work very well at WOT, and can idle well if tuned with a Synchrometer, however if you look at the fuel curve throughout the entire rpm range they are lean/rich, and depending on the Injector, the casting grows with engine temperature causing the butterflies to not fit their bores properly leading to inconsistent idleing. This is most prominent on older units where the butterflies are closer to the Head.

If you are dead set on doing this I would look into Fran Olson and Megasquirt-Fran is very good at converting mechanical Hilborns to efi (and they don't have the fuel rail "look"), has an A/FX Dodge done that way, and is one of the most knowledgeable guys out there for converting Stack Injection-he works with Mike Chilandro (also known as "Alkydigger"), and Mike can sell you a complete Enderle/Hilborn unit or he also supplies Fran (which I think is the most economical route)-

My suggestion? Individual Throttle Bodies or downdraft webers on the proper manifold. Neither one of these setups are going to like a rumpity rump camshaft but; you can screw together a 383 with a mild cam and still make plenty of power.

I had a close friend who tried the mechanical fuel inj thing. He's 30 like me and got a swingin deal from some old roundy round guys. He had enough to mock it up, and it looked extremely bad ***; but it never ran for beans. Everything was mismatched and for alky. Trying to get what he needed was very hard. He found some guy who ran Hilborns on the street and by the time they got off the phone he basically learned it was almost impossible to dial everything down to do what he needed. Its a dead nuts simple system and works great at what its designed for. It will require help to start, it will never idle for beans and its going to be a bear to source parts that work well for you.

If you put stacks on a set of downdrafts; you get 90% of the look with efficient carbs and about a 3rd of the cost.
With the webbers; find a brit car mechanic near you, he probably has 3 webber cores and a pile of parts to build them as a matched set.

Thanks for the info guys... I just finished reading all mentioneoned on the hilborne site after being directed by their tech dep.. It's definitely achievable with an elec kit. Pricey buy but definitely cool an worth it. I'm gonna keep reading on converting old mech systems. The new stuff is huge dollars but I've been told used kits come up every now & then.. I'm in no rush.

First ever twin turbo drag engine (claimed) feed into hilborne stacks I'm looking at side mounted. That's kinda fugly but still cool!
