as I recall 8 volt was used for a few years. Farmers used them in 6 volt equipment often from what I have read over the years

8 volts

On an old style coils and points regulator you can use a volt meter to check as you bend the spring brackets to get the generator output high enough to charge your 8 V battery . The 8 volt ones are hard to find, Usually easier on old equipment to install a 12 V one wire alternator, leave the 6 v starter in place, just don't crank too long. change the light bulbs and ignition coil or add a resistor.

Check with a farm supply store. 8 volt batteries were sometimes used on farm tractors. The previous owner had even installed one in my 1948 Plymouth, but I've since converted to 12 volt.

x2

I used to be a parts guy at a Ford/New Holland dealership. We stocked 8v batteries for the people who had hard starting 6v tractors. Instead of cleaning all the wiring connections on their old tractor, they would just throw an 8v battery in it. It might have been a little harder the on the points and coil, but on an 8n/2n/9n, those parts were super cheap.

One word of caution, if you have an original tube style radio, or an autronic eye automatic headlight dimmer, the extra voltage can fry some of the tubes.

Good luck...
