81 elcamino engine swap

i'm new to this forum, looks real cool though.

i have a 81 elcamino with a 305, electronic advance distributor(stock for that year), and a newly rebuilt rochesster 4 barrel carb just rebuilt and running real nice, maybe a little rich.i blew the engine a week after rebuilding the carb.

my new engine is an 88 305 high output motor from an iroc, with the pullys and belts from the 81, the ignition from the 81, and the carb from the 81, and i'm running straight dual exhaust with vortex mufflers and stock intake and exhaust manifolds. me and a friend swapped the engine , he timed it by ear, and it ran nice, real nice, puchy, tight everything , but it over heated real quick.

after i changed the thermostat, radiator, waterpump, and cursed for a few days, i took of the intake manifold and put the gasket the right way, and the engine runs cool now.

problem is i can't get it timed now. its alright but not like it was.

my questions are, running this engine and ignition:

#1 what do i gap the plugs to? .035? .045? something else?

#2 what do i advance the timing to?

right now i'm at .035 and 6B on the timing.

i don't know a how lot a bout cars, so i'm nervous to just try things and see what happens as i don't know what may cause damage .

any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the engine is mainly stock, I would bump the timing to around 10btdc. The plugs should be .045, although some may say more.
