83 S10 2.8L w/700R4 4WD to 94 4.3L 4L60 2WD conversion

Ok. I have a 1983 Chevy S10 Blazer 4WD I am trying to get back into good running shape as a daily driver. Nothing special, just something I can rely on.

It currently has a 2.8L 178 CID V6 engine with a TH700R4 transmission and then whatever model T-Case is in there (im not sure to be honest).

The truck had been sitting for 4 years because the transmission constantly leaked fluid and wouldn't have any pull to it in any gear and had previously lost the reverse gear...I have no idea what happened. I have thought about rebuilding the transmission which I can get done for $600 with me taking it out and reinstalling it. Or I could go buy a used one from craigslist.com or a junkyard and pay $200, 300, 400, 500 etc for one and have absolutely no guarantee on it and not know truly what condition it is in.

Keep in mind that there are other parts I need to replace on my Blazer such as most of the interior due to a missing drivers window and the like.

A friend of mine has a wrecked 1994 S10 Blazer but it has a good 4.3L Vortec engine with a 4L60 transmission but it is 2WD. I can buy the truck for $600 and I know the engine and transmission are good. It is also newer and more reliable.

Now my question is, Can I do an engine and transmission swap and put the 1994 drivetrain in my 1983 and still have 4WD using the 2WD transmission but bolting the T-Case to it.

I have read that I could possibly change out the output shaft and tailhousing on the 2WD one with the old 4WD one and bolt the T-Case to it and not have to change the driveshafts or anything.

I really need some advice on what problems I could encounter with this, that is if this will actually work. And if you could possibly post instructions/pictures of maybe a "How To" on this, that would be great. Especially since I am only 17 y/o and have never done any of this before.

Sorry for typing so much but I wanted to be as clear/concise as possible so everyone could understand my situation.

Thank you,

Danny

s10 swap

I just got done putting a 5.7 TPI in my 84 s10, it was fairly easy, I do know that everything from the 4.3 will work but you have to pretty much use it all unless your 2.8 was fuel injected, as for as the tranny I am not sure unless you just made it a two wheel drive, just leave out the transfer case out and the front drive shaft, buest place to get info on this is www.v8s10.org thats where I got all my info just becareful they will try to talk you into putting a smallblock in it.

You will a oil pan from a 4WD 4.3 . Also the exhaust crossover pipe from
a 4WD . Use the transmission and driveshaft from the 4.3 as is, it should
fit for a 2WD application with out the front driveshaft .

GM has a 3.4L crate engine that would be a direct replacement for the 2.8. Or find a 3.4 out of a rwd application (Camaro) works as well. One guy on a Jeep Cherokee forum I go to has a 3.8 out of a Camaro swapped into an old 2.8v6 Cherokee engine bay.
