Red face 83 Z28 Transmission - YIKES!

Stumbled in surfing the web hoping to find an inexpensive resolution to problems I'm having with the transmission in my 83 Camaro Z28, I hope you all can help. Here's the deal...

I've got an automatic transmission with overdrive (1,2,3 and drive). The first gear to go was drive, then shortly after I lost 2nd and 3rd. All I've got now is 1st and Reverse. When I put the car in drive it doesn't shift out. So I end up rapping out in first gear and let off when I get close to red-lining it. When my speed decreases enough for the transmission to kick back in, I do it all over again. I was told to check for a compression/hose leak but found nothing. A few months prior of the transmission going out the transmission linkage cable came undone and instead of buying the correct bolt to reconnect it, I afro-engineered it so that I could atleast shift gears without having to get under the car and shift manually. I don't think that has anything to do with it, but I thought I'd throw it in. Transmission fluid has always been up to snuff. Any ideas?

It sounds like this car is your daily driver. Why in the world don't you take it to a tranny shop and get it running again?

I must have given you a false impression by saying the gears went out 1 by 1, but no...it's not my daily driver. That's what my 93 Ranger is for.

A while back, my camaro was parked next to a ford ranger that had started on fire due to a short in the alternator and caused damage to the front quarter panel and tire. My insurance policy didn't cover the accident and I haven't gotten to the repairs yet so I'm storing the camaro 30 miles away. Any ideas???

I replaced the tire right away, but haven't painted the quarter panel. Just going to repaint the car.
