Im doing some work on my neighbors 85 Chevy 3/4 ton pickup that he just bought from the fire department. It has really lo gears in it something like 4:56's if that sounds right. and i was wondering is i could put the front and rear end carriers from a 74 1/2 ton pickup in it. Thanks in advance

the carriers from the 1/2 ton wont fit.... the rear is probably a 8.875(12 bolt)from the 74,the 85 should have a 9.5"(smallblock) or 10.5"(big block)the front axle from the 74 is going to be a dana 44,the 85 should be a 8.5" sorry...

If you want to swap out the entire axle housing wheel to wheel on both the front and rear of the truck it will work just fine.

Pete was right on the carriers though, won't work.

wow you are wanting to do the complete opposite that everyone else does with these trucks, i think youre the first perso ive ever heard of wanting to downgrade/lighten a k20 or k30

i bet its a real nice and well maintained truck, sorry to hear its going to be modified, i was wanting to get this really sharp 79 k30 that the local fire dept auctioned off recently,
i think it only went for 1500,
it was crazy

anyways, the carriers wont swap,
the axles under both the trucks are different models/size,

the 74 would be a 12 bolt 8.875 rear and dana 44 front

and the 85 would be either the 9.5 or the 10.5 14 bolt rear and a 10 bolt 8.5 front as previously said

you would have to swap entire axles out, and that will require driveline/u joint work and using the 1/2 ton u bolts and plates and so forth
