I would go with a 6L FI swap and run a T56 but it can be pricey.

The 305 L69/HO heads will need some port work to help them breath on the 383. A set of 96-99 Vortec heads would be better if your budget allows.
A TH2004r trans would be a better fit/choice since that's what came in 85-88 SSMonte's. It would save you Crossmember & Driveshaft Mods also.
Lots of good SS Info here>> http://www.montecarloss.com/general.html & http://www.montecarloss.com/technical.html

The ONLY thing you have to make sure of is 55-85 small block take 1 flexplate, 86-up take an external balanced flexplate, and the 383 may take one from a 350 OR 400, the 400 flexplate was an external balance piece.

I have never really checked into whether the external balanced 400 and 454 flexplates were balanced the same as the 86-up 305 and 350 pieces, but they may have the same balance weights, I'm not sure. All might just be different to their own, I know 86-up 305, 350, and 4.3 V-6 pieces will interchange.
