86 chevy 4x4 with a 700r4 problems, possible swap?

I have an 86 chevy 4x4 with a 700r4 that has problems changing gears and would like to know what to check as well I need to know if a 4L60e form a 93 chevy van can be used in its place. If so what all will I need to do to make this work. Thanks a lot and if I were rich I would just buy a new 700r4

The 4L60E is the fully electronic version of the 700R4, it operates entirely off the vehicles computer. To use this trans in your vehicle you`d have to have a aftermarket computer to operate it, and they are rather expensive.

Is the problem changing gears with shifter or is it actual shifting problems?

As already explained. The 4L60E is an electrinic transmission. It would cost more to adapt it than it would to have the 700 rebuilt.

shifting

no it doesn't shift with gear shift, except back into low, also is it possible to use this 4l60e and just **** it like a manual transmission?

You CAN'T use the 4L60E. The pressure is electronically controlled as are the shift solenoids,TCC solenoid, and 3-2 downshift solenoid. Without the transmission operated by a computer it will be in limo mode which is maximum line pressure, and 3rd gear only. You have to have power to the solenoids for it to operate in any other geatr. 3rd gear is when both solenoids are OFF.

4l60e question

so this transmission cant be shifted manually without the electronics working off computer. I have computer for the 93 van with the transmission. I was wondering if it is possibe to put it on the 86 truck and what it would entail? I have very little money and I am trying to solve my problem. Thanks in advance for your patience here.

If you are short on cash, STOP looking at the 4L60E as 10sec70 mentions it will be MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE to try and install the computer, and associated wiring, to make the 4L60E work in your vehicle.

Just rebuild the 700.

Do you have over-size tires on this truck?

Since you have over-size tires on the truck-have you changed out the ring & pinion sets in BOTH axles to account for the over-size tires?

It's more than just wiring, and the computer that you have to add. Be prepared to add a Throttle Position Sensor, and a Crank Position Sensor to your existing engine as the computer relies on these sensors to control line pressure, shift points, passing gear, lock-up, and probably 100 other things I'm forgetting. Plus, if the computer you have has VATS, you will need to get into the programming and by-pass that portion of the PCM.

If you have the time, patience, money, and expertise-by all means put the 4L60E in it as they are stronger transmissions (by way of higher line pressure-same internals), fewer add-on's to cause issues-no TV cable, and no governor to stick.

But wait, if you have not matched the ring & pinion sets to the tire size-I'd start there before I worried about a transmission, or computer, or wiring, or anything else.

Lets go back to your original post then....

is the 1993 chevy van a 4x4 vehicle built by GM? Perhaps I missed that if posted

IF the 4L60e van trans is a 2 wheel drive unit, the out put shaft needs to be changed to a 4x4 shaft for the 1986 chev truck.
