Make sure the distributor is getting power.

check to make sure the distributor is turning when the engine is turning. The timing chain could have jumped, broke, stripped gears and not be turning.
Did you watch the dizzy turn when you replaced it with a new one?

It very well could be the module , but some testing is required to determine that. You could just throw a part at it, but that is a pricey way to go if it turns out to be something else.
If you search the knowlege base here at Hotrodders, you will find the info you need to test the ignition system and determine the problem.

Get a timing light and someone that knows how to use it and set the timing.
The knock could have something to do with oil pressure or lack of it. Whats the oil pressure? The distributor drives the oil pump and if the distributor isn't engaging the oil pump drive shaft correctly you shouldn't run it. Did the distributor sit flush with the manifold without a lot of force when you re-installed it? It has to be turned to the correct position before dropping it into the hole to line it up with the oil pump drive.
