86 Chevy k10 4x4 700r4 , converter question

I need some help with my 86 Chevy k10 4x4 with a 700r4. I was having some slipping issues and whinning noises coming from the tranny. I suspected the torque converter. I bought a used tranny and torque converter. I was told that it was out of a 82 camaro. I verified with the id numbers that it was a 700r4. All I used was the torque converter. Before replacing the converter the truck shifted thru all the gears fine other than the slipping and whinning when you first take off it worked great. After replacing the converter It won't shft into overdrive. It shifts fine and the whinning noise went away but no overdrive. I guess my question is , does the torque converter have anything to do with overdrive? I used autozone's website and looked up the torque converter for both vehicles and the share the same p/n. Not knowing a whole lot about anything I think I did everthing correct. Fluid level is okay and all the cables and wires are hooked up the same way before I took it apart. Any help or a pat on the head would be greatly appreciated.
