86 Corvette Tilt/Tele wiring issue

My 48 suburban appears to have a mid '80s Corvette tilt/tele steering column with turn signals, flashers, horn, and maybe dimmer wires coming out the bottom. Whoever put the column in jammed all the wires into a harmonica looking connector, stacking several wires into some of the holes and using small "eye" ends on the wires or nothing at all. The "harmonica" is obviously too small for this application and it looks as though the proper connector would fit between 2 metal "ears" on the bottom side of the base of the column where the "harmonica" is presently located. How can I find the proper connector? Also, I have found wiring diagrams online which should cover this column, but the wire colors in the diagram do not match what is hanging out of the bottom of the column. Someone probably just threw in what they had on hand...so now I guess I get to do a bunch of testing. Anyone know of a thread addressing this? Thanks.

Hi,
A couple of those wires are probably left over from the vats, 86 was the first year for that system in the vette, I have no idea what those wire colors would be. Might try looking on one of the vette forms.

A Closer Look

I got on the magnifying glasses and contorted myself upside down under the dash to begin testing wires and, lo and behold, the "harmonica" connector is actually part of the aftermarket harness and the only micky-mousing that went on under there was with the terminals on the end of each wire coming from the column. I also discovered that several of the wires DO have little colored lines running down them that got partially covered when the column was painted. Now all I have to do is find out which wire goes where and pray that the horn wire is actually connected to something up in the column, as I for sure do not want to pull the column out.

Hi,
VATS= Vehicle Anti Theft System. The wires may have been removed previously. On the ignition key there would be a little pill on the side of the key, it's a resistor & if the value of the resistor isn't correct for that vehicle, it would disable the starter & injectors. Well those wires ran down the column in the harness & into another part under the dash.
Glad to hear your getting through it OK

No Vats...only confusion

I don't see any Vats stuff, on the key or anywhere...but that doesn't mean some of those wires hanging down aren't leftover vats.

I did find, however, that I do not understand the horn electrical. I have a little tube (plastic I think) sticking up through the steering wheel which I gather is the place the wire from the horn assembly goes. When I telescope the wheel to it's full height I can stick my finger under the tube and I CAN SEE MY FINGER. I would have thought there would be some sort of contact ring under there...some way for the wire to receive juice even though the wheel is turning. Am I missing some parts? Do I have to take off the steering wheel and/or part of the tilt/tele stuff to make my horn work?
