871 Blower questions

I am looking at a 871 blower (177). I don;t know anything about them accept they mean more power. I have a stock 454 with a cam I installed to make some noise, roller rockers and a Holley 750 with vacuume secondaries. I have an MSD ignision and 6AL box installed. What will it take to make this blower work for me so I don't tear up my engine. I am new to the big block world but love power. I have been more of a small block man. I just put the 454 in my 1969 camaro. I am installing a 12 bolt rear end with 4:10 gears. Seeking advise and past experiences. Thanks, Jerry

I'm confused by your parenthetical 177. There are 8-71 blowers and there are 177 blowers. They are very different pieces (well, other than being Roots-type blowers).

This is a 177...

This is an 8-71...

Which are you looking at?

Do you have any idea what the compression ratio of your 454 is? If it's much over 9:1, your not going to be able to run much boost (assuming you're running pump gas).

Here's a good basic overview of blowers and blower motors...

Sorry about the confusion, I was a little confused by the advertisement also. it's a 177 upgrade but to what I don't know. He had it on a HO 454 making 500HP and he said it boosted his HP to about 750. Is this possible or just smoke? It is a wieand 177 and on the back it says Holley. I hope this makes since. Any way, my compression is stock with no bore, so it can't be very much. What do you think? Also thanks for the website link, Thanks, Jerry

Holley owns Weiand, so that's not an issue. The Weiand web page on the 177
here says a 177 on a big block will make about 600 hp., so I think 750 is a stretch, certainly on pump gas.

First we need to figure out what motor you have. There should be a code stamped on the front of the block above the timing cover. There should be a letter followed by four numbers then two or three letters. See if you can find that code and post it here. We'll look it up for you.

177 blower

OK, well I figured the guy didn't know much about superchargers either, when he said 177 and 8-71 in the same sentance. I thought that was wrong but I second guessed my self. I am not home right now, I am away working. But will be home in a few days. Any way, this is what I know about this engine. It is a standard bore 454, standard flat top pistons oval port heads. I put the holley carb, larg size jet coat headers, the cam specs I have wrote down at home, I will get that for you later and as i stated earlier, MSD set up and roller rockers. I don't know if that helps. Thanks, Jerry
