88 Buick AC compressor

When I turn on the AC nothing happens ( the compressor don't turn on ) but as soon as I hit passing gear the compressor turns on and it works good. But when I restart the engine I need to hit passing gear ETC. Its like the compressor won't tirn on until you raise the rpms ?

Most cars have a relay that takes out the ac when the car goes into passing gear to allow all the power for passing, but, if that goes out I don't believe you would have any AC normally or passing, or you would have just the opposite, AC normally and while passing. So, maybe the system has a leak and is low on charge and is being kept from operating by the low pressure cutout switch, except when you hit the higher rpms and the compressor is pumping better and able to reach an operating pressure and cools then. Either way, you need to take it to someone that can check out the system for you before it gets too hot and you have to wait to get it fixed with everyone else that waits until the middle of summer to get their AC fixed. Let us know what it takes to fix your problem please!
