88 royale popping sound from rear when brakes applied

Hello I got a 91 olds royale that popps in the rear when brakes are applied moderately.......I thought it would be drums cracked or warped..so I replaced those but it still does it............a single continious pop each time the tire goes completely around until stopped.........I have never run across this kind of a problem before, has me kinda stumped.

How are the backing plates, any groves where the brake shoes ride?

Grooves in the backing plate is a good place to check. I've also seen a machining groove in the drum cause this, though those were drums that had been turned and the tool bit wasn't removed from the drum face before screwing the tool post back out. The groove acted like a screw and would "screw" the shoes out when applied. Once to the end of the groove the drums snapped back.
