89 C1500 305 to 383 conversion

I need some advice from folks who have done this. I'm swapping out my TBI 305 for a vortec-headed 383 with q-jet. My problem is with all the accessories that go on the front of the engine. The 305 setup has the alternator and AC compressor with brackets to the intake manifold, and this is impossible with the vortec intake manifold - there are no mounts cast into the manifold for bolting the brackets. The manifolds I looked at on-line don't have the mounts in the right places either. Any advice here on how to get this to work?

Convert it to a newer serpentine system from a junked vehicle.
Make sure you get the complete system from the crank pulley, water pump pulley, brackets, power steering pulley, etc. GM made some changes to the system over the years, and this is why it`s best to get the complete system together. Later serpentine systems bolt up to the heads and block so everything will clear the intake manifold. Make sure you take a power steering pulley puller to the yard with you.

Thanks, but don't the vortecs have the AC compressor and the alternator on opposite sides from where the 89 engine has them (swapped sides)? If so that means I'll have to re-wire and re-plumb and I wonder if that would be harder than custom-making some brackets or something similar to that. Am I wrong about the accessories being reversed?

I used a serpentine system off a 92 camaro when I did my cutlass build, I used a Vortec 350 with Vortec heads. Alternator mounts on the drivers side, A/C compressor on the passengers side. If it requires you do so rerouting that`s no issue, nor is extending the lenth of the wires if need be as long as it`s done right with weatherpak butt connectors. I also used the A/C lines off the camaro, and bought a A/C dryer for a 92 camaro and it all bolted up nicely.

The setup you describe has the compressor and the alternator on the same sides as what I have now. So thank you, I will have to go to the junkyard and look around at the cars.
