Has any one used a 9 3/8 Lincoln / merc differential in a Ford 9" housing. Both are 31 spline axles. I have been informed it will Fit, with a slight notch cut in the housing mating surface for the bigger 9 3/8 ring gear to slide through. Is this correct?
Yes, that is correct. You need to cut clearance in the top and bottom of the mating surface. Some gaskets have the notch cut in them and you can use that for a guide to cut the housing. Don't cut more than you need.
The 57- early 60's housings are smaller, there night be a problem in those. I have a 9 3/8 Lincoln disc rear in one T project, and a early 60's 9 in another. I have a spare 9 with 3.50 gears that I thought I might want in the Lincoln case, The one with the 9 has a buick V6 5 speed and I wouldn't want the 2. 70 Lincoln 9 3/8 gears in it.
