9.3'' Pontiac rear gear swap

Hi guys!

I want to change my rear gears from 2.56 to 3.42. I think I have everything I need to do this swap including the carrier for higher gears.

I donīt wanna run into trouble or a lot of guesswork during the build, so Iīm asking in advance...

Is there anything to pay special attention for?

thanks

Markus

Just curious, so you did find the rearend in the '64 wasn't a 8.2" after all? I recall a post you made earlier about this.

Anyway, there were three 'generations' of the 9.3, so I'm guessing the replacement carrier is compatible w/the axles you have, or you got the correct axles.

Fabcraft Metal Works, 800-208-8242 fabcraftmetalworks.com were to have a detailed manual available on the 9.3 but no idea if this actually came to be.

Ran across some more 9.3 info while looking for Fabcraft info, this is where I saw the 'manual' mentioned- http://www.mydigitalpublication.com/....php?id=171845

Hi cobalt327!

Yes, it actually is a 9.3'' rear end. At least this is what I was told by Brad from Fabcraft Metal Works.

What Oil would you suggest?

I use Kendall 80w90 fossil diff lube, but this could change depending on the recommendations of the diff manufacturer. In your 9.3, heavier lube might be preferred.

Additives for the clutch-type LSD using fossil oil is GM additive #1052358 (was a good number, but check to be sure) or Ford Motorsports p/n M-19546-A1 or Spicer p/n 43161. If you use synthetic lube you'll want to check into what to use, although I heard Motorcraft p/n XL3 was good LSD additive w/synthetic diff lube.
