Post 9" Ford Breather

Just bought a car with a 9" Ford Rearend (Dutchman?) Strange gear carrier, etc. Getting quite a bit of gear oil past the axle seals and suspect it might be due no breather on the rear end... looked all up and down the axle shafts and can't find one. There's a pipe plug on the carrier itself. What do you think of using it and plumbing a line away from the carrier to create a vent. Is there an easier way?

I would drill a small hole in the axle tube and tap it to 1/8 pipe threads

Cool

Contact Dutchman on line and see if they offer a resolve to your problem. If you get into the rearend you may find no axle seals in the axle housing. There should be a seal just inside the housing past the Diff. One on the left and one on the right. This keeps gear oil from running the length of the tubes and out of the bearing. No big deal, drop the drive sheft, remove the axle bolts behind the break plate and slide the axle out. Remove the Diff. bolts and remove the diff. and place the seals in the axle tubes, one on the left and one omn the right of the diff.
