Post 9 inch ford

Howdy- I have talked to a fellow who has a 83 Ford 1/2 ton 2wd that he is parting out. I haven't seen it yet but I am interested in the rearend. Will this be a 9 inch and if so, can it be narrowed so I can slip it into my 34 olds project? I can't find a good source of info for this question. The resources I have looked at don't list the 83 1/2 tons. Mike

I beleive you will find they are not 9" rears, I have an 81 short stepside and it has a rear loader in it.

It may be, I have seen some, probably depends on the engine. The real problem is bolt flange and other things, it can be narrowed(all rears can as such) but with the extra expense unless he's throwing it your way I'd look for a car one.

Thanks for the thoughts- I've got some other options with regards to the rearend for my project. There is a late 70s granada that I will look at and see if it will work. Mike

If I remember correctly the 9 inch units that are the narrowest are the ones from 57 to 59 Fords. I am using a 57 unit in my 36 Pontiac and it is the perfect width. The early mustang units are a close second and are available in both 8 and 9 inch. The 8 inch will work fine unless you are building a fire breathing engine, up to about 350 horse is fine. Good luck

It isn't going to be fire breathing power plant but I'm expecting 470 hp on the bench. I think that I need to stick with the 9 inch and build it right. Mike

I don't know if these will help you or not but here are a couple of links with info on 9-inch rears.
