9 inch Ford Rear axle bearing

I'm running a 9 inch Ford rear end with the big bearing axles. The bearings I have are the sealed type and not the roller bearing type. On occasions, while making a turn or backing up I can hear a scrapping noise coming from the rearend or brakes. While crusing or highway there is no sound at all. Without pulling the axles, is there a way of telling if your axle bearings are worn or need replacing? What is the typical sound they make when they dry out or are worn? I'll probably have to pull the axle eventually because the seal is starting to leave an oil film on my rims as well. I've also noticed after driving for a while, a odor of gear oil is coming from the rearend. NO leaks though? Suggestions?

Raise the rear end off the ground and push and pull on the wheel. If you get any movement at all the bearing is bad.
