9 inch Ford rear axles
I have pulled the center chunk 28 spline from my housing and have 31 spline traction lock replacement.Looking for somewhere to purchase new 31 spline axles to replace 28 spline axles removed from my 34 Ford street rod project. I don't really want to spend "crazy" $$ for Currie axles as this car is street driven only and will be powered by modest H.P. small block. What is a reasonable cost for these axles with new bearings?

Ford 28s cannot be resplined into 31s. edited: I see their site is slightly ambiguous to the unknowledgeable person. Resplining applies to shortening the axle and recutting the splines. 28 spline Ford axles are smaller diameter their full length, as well as in the spline area, than the 31s. Ford 28s can never be resplined as the spline area is usually a larger diameter than the axle forging diameter. I suggest contacting Currie to see if 28 spline axle gears can be purchased for your 31 spline 4 spider traction lock. Last edited by xntrik; 01-12-2007 at 01:42 PM. |

Don't know your axle width flange to flange, but I'd recommend watching the classifieds on the 4x4 sites. A lot of guys are upgrading to 35 & 40 spline stuff, so decent 31 splines are often available, and a good set of pics will tell you whether their abused or not (see the last pic in my project journal).
My favorite site, although a lot less PC than here, is www.pirate4x4.com, which has a great classifieds section. Hope this helps! |

9 inch Ford axles
I appreciate the return feedback. I have considered using the 28 spline axles set-up but the rear is an open center 3:50 ratio which should be gone through. The 31 spline center is a traction lock and is rebuilt. However it just so happens I have found a rebuilt 3:50- 28 spline traction lock at a local speed shop. I have decided to stay with the 28 spline in any event. I might just sell the 31 spline! Thanks again.

I was referring to the axle gears inside the carrier can be changed from 31 to 28. All 31 spline units are 4 spider gears. Some 28 spline units are 4 spider, some are 2 spider. Any will probably serve you well with a modest engine and no slicks. |

As I mentioned in my previous post, I often see 'em on pirate4x4 classifieds. Don't know if you are still looking, but here is a current set for sale. Hope it helps.
