90 Alero problems

My wifes car, a 90 Olds Alero, 2.4L, is having a problem that I thought was a plugged fuel filter, but I changed it and it still seems to be starving for fuel. When stopped, the idle goes way down, and has a few times died. The check engine light has not came on, so I don't have any idea as to what it could be. I don't want to take it to a mechanic and pay big bucks if it is something simple.. .. .. Any one got any suggestions??

They never made an Alero in 1990. That said, I would put a fuel pressure gauge on the valve connected to the fuel rails and see where it's reading and compare that to the factory specs. It's a start.

dirty air filter

clogged fuel injectors
fuel pump about to go out (get a fuel pressure tester loaner from o'reilly's)

do a compression test

weak spark (coil, plugs, wires, bad ground)

Go to local auto parts store and borrow their code reader. Just because the check engine light isn't on doesn't mean there isn't a few codes in there.
